2022 Best's Bin 1 Shiraz

Best's has been making wine at Great Western since 1866. The Thomson family took over in 1920 and haven't left. The Concongella Vineyard still has vines from that first planting - some of the oldest Shiraz in the world.

Bin 1 is exactly what the name implies: the wine that best represents what this estate and this region does with Shiraz. Fruit from Concongella and Salvation Gully, a small whole bunch portion, twelve months in French oak including old foudres.

Great Western Shiraz is very much a 'cool-climate' style. The nights are long, ripening is slow, and the wines end up elegant and medium-bodied rather than extracted and heavy. Dark plum, blackberry, black pepper, a savoury backbone and a hint of spice on the finish. Velvety tannins, good acidity, and the kind of structure that rewards a few years in the cellar, if you can resist.
