NV Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Blanc
Charles Heidsieck is famous for a richer, more robust style of Champagne, so their take on a Blanc de Blancs was always going to be interesting. Relaunched in 2018, this isn't your typical sharp, acid-driven Chardonnay fizz. It’s got the house DNA all over it.
They source fruit from 10 different crus - including Oger and Vertus - and blend in about 25% reserve wines averaging 5 years old. Then it sits in the cellar for 3 to 4 years before disgorging.
What is released at the end of all of that is a Blanc de Blancs that feels generous rather than lean. It’s got a suave, velvety texture - almost creamy - with notes of white peach, hazelnut and candied citrus. There’s still plenty of tension and a nice salty kick on the finish, but it’s definitely on the richer end of the spectrum.
It’s a bold wine that manages to be fresh and voluptuous at the same time.
