2025 Garagiste Merricks Rose

Merricks is always the anchor for what Barney Flanders does down on the Mornington Peninsula, a cooler, more wind-swept corner that gives his wines a proper, structural backbone. With this 2025 Pinot Rose release, he has taken the 'rosato' brief and given it some serious attitude - grown on those classic red volcanic soils, treated with the same respect and patience he gives his premium reds.

The season was a quick, dry run that required smart picking decisions to keep the freshness alive. Barney keeps things simple in the shed: wild fermentation, a bit of old wood, and plenty of time on lees to build up texture. This is not some simple, safe pink wine designed to be downed without thinking.

It pours a pale, bright copper colour. It dumps the usual sweet strawberries and cream Pinot rose style, delivering a dry, savoury crunch full of red currants, sour cherry skin, and a distinct, wild-herb bitterness. There is a great, waxy texture that fills the mouth before a fine line of native acidity cleans up the finish.

2025 Usher Tinkler Cotes De Pokolbin Rose

While the Hunter Valley is steeped in heavy heritage, Usher Tinkler approaches his family estate fruit with a completely modern mindset. He isn't interested in making sub-regional copies of European styles; he just wants to make smashable wines that suit the Aussie way of life and show what Hunter could be.

For this pink wine, he took a block of old Shiraz vines planted back in 1965 and picked the fruit early to trap its structural energy. He sent it straight to a fast press and kept it entirely in stainless steel. Skipping oak altogether keeps the focus squarely on the raw vibrancy of the vintage.

It drops the sweet, confectionery tropes of commercial rosé for a savoury, refreshing crunch. There is plenty of redcurrant snap, a bit of pomegranate pith, and a flick of white pepper spice held together by a long line of mouthwatering acid.

It is an unforced, casual rose that doesn't demand you think too hard about it.

2025 Sutton Grange Fairbank Rose

Sutton Grange has basically dominated the Australian Rosé scene lately, having picked up Best Rosé in the Halliday Wine Companion three years running. This 2025 Fairbank release is all about maintaining that momentum.

It’s a bit of a "kitchen sink" blend of Syrah, Cabernet, Sangiovese, and a splash of Viognier, all grown organically on the granite slopes of Mount Alexander. Wineamker Chris Smales ferments it in old French oak, which gives it a creamy, biscuity weight without making it feel heavy.

It’s got a lovely salmon hue and is packed with cranberry, wild strawberry, and a bit of mandarin peel. You get these exotic notes of fennel and cumin that make it feel savoury and a bit 'grown-up.' It’s bone-dry with a crunch like a fresh red apple, but that little hit of creaminess in the mid-palate adds an extra dimension.

It’s easy to see why it’s become the benchmark for Central Victorian Rosé; it’s just a super-polished, reliable bottle that never misses the mark.

2025 Nocturne SR Sangiovese Tempranillo Rose

Julian Langworthy is known in certain circles as the 'King of Pink'.

The man crafts an ungodly amount of top shelf Rose in his day job as chief winemaker at Deep Woods. For his Nocturne label, he's looking for a slightly more savoury and structural style of pink.

This is mostly Sangiovese, with small amounts of Tempranillo and Grenache, picked specifically for Rose and turned into a vibrant, textural, highly gluggable wine. It's ready to slake your thirst whenever you get the craving.

The advantage of making Rose from these varieties is that they come with plenty of tannin and crisp acidity, by using some lees time and a little barrel work, Julian can pack some flesh on those bones. Dry, savoury, and wonderfully fragrant, this is sure to be a favourite.

2025 The Hedonist Sangiovese Rose

This is a classic dry and savoury stye of Rose made from organic Sangiovese grapes grown in McLaren Vale.

Sangiovese is such a great variety for Rosé. The natural structure and savouriness of the variety lends some great architecture to a pink wine. This version, from winemaking team of Walter Clappis and Kimberly and James Cooter, shows clean lines of fresh acidity, moreish red fruits and plenty of spice through the finish.

It's an easy-sipping wine, spotless and delicious, and a straight-up bargain. What's not to like?
