2022 Bernabeleva Madrid Camino de Navaherreros Garnacha

2021 Vina Ijalba Tempranillo Rioja

Dionisio Ruiz planted his first vine in 1975, before years later founding Viña Ijalba, now in its third generation, producing quality ecological wines with a nice balance of the traditional techniques of la Rioja, with approachable modern stylings.

Viña Ijalba Tempranillo Rioja 2021 is 100% tempranillo. It's a generous, full-flavoured style, full of Spanish flair, but without the heavy oak that can often drag these Rioja reds down.

2022 Gran Cerdo Tempranillo

Not a normal Rioja, not normal by any standard, but delicious pulpy Tempranillo from the iconoclast Gonzalo Grijalba

In fact, he can't call it Rioja, and nowhere is it mentioned on the label. Rather the label includes the quote "this wine is dedicated to the bank executives that denied loans to us on the basis that wine is not a seizable asset." Gran Cerdo means Fat Pig, and the swine on the label has a mouthful of bank notes. Love a metaphor.

2022 Bodegas Exopto Rioja Bozeto de Exopto

Tom Puyaubert's Rioja wines are finer expressions, with no American oak, and fruit sourced from higher altitude vineyards, many organic (no mean feat in Rioja).

The Bozeto is his bargain red offering, a gorgeous blend here that features 40% Grenache, Tempranillo & a splash of Graciano coaxed into a silky yet spicy wine of supreme drinkability.

A hands-off approach gives the wine a natural feel. Fermentation is in both concrete and tank, then ageing in concrete and large old oak. Some semi-carbonic maceration adds to aromatic lift and a bouncy tang. Lovers of Spanish reds, jump on in!

2021 La Maldicion Vinos de Madrid Tinto Fino

The rocky Valdilecha vineyard is the on the opposite side of Madrid to Bernabeleva, where winemaker Marc Isart has his day job as head winemaker.

This Tinto is 80% wild Tempranillo and 20% Malvar, a native white grape. Co-fermented, three or so weeks on skins, all cement and tank, no oak - a recipe for bright, energetic Spanish red, a long way removed from traditional Tempranillos from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

2022 Alfredo Maestro Vina Almate

Viña Almate was the name of the first vineyard Alfredo ever planted. This is a cracking Tempranillo made from old bush vines grown on various plots from 700m asl in Peñafiel to 1000m asl in the Valtiendas mountains.

All hand harvested, as is the only way with these vines, the fruit comes into the winery as perfect whole clusters. Alfredo ferments this wine as is - bunches and all.

It results in a lighter, spicier, more fruit forward style of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) which is meant to be drunk in its youth.
