2023 Benjamin Leroux Nuits-Saint-Georges Rouge

This cuvée comes from Comblanchien, the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges that’s increasingly recognised for the quality of its reds. The vineyard is organically farmed by a friend of Leroux’s and split into two tiny parcels: one with mature 40-year-old vines, the other a younger block just past 15 years. Together they total only a quarter hectare, so production here is naturally limited.

In 2023, Leroux handled the fruit gently, with the wine starting its élevage in barrel before finishing in foudre. That choice helps to keep the style precise and lifted, showing the fragrance and limestone tension that marks this part of the Côte. The vintage itself brought good ripeness but also plenty of freshness, giving a wine that balances juicy cherry and strawberry fruit with a fine mineral line.

It’s not a blockbuster, but that’s the appeal – a classy, understated Burgundy with the right mix of charm and structure. At this level, and from a name like Leroux, it represents serious value.
