2023 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans Rouge

Les Mitans sits right in the centre of Volnay, beneath the village, and has long been seen as one of the most representative sites of the appellation. Leroux farms 0.65 hectares here, with vines averaging 50 years old. The soils are a fine mix of clay and limestone, which hold enough water in dry years to keep the balance just right. His parcel brushes up against Clos de la Barre, another prized 1er Cru, giving you a sense of the calibre of this site.

In 2023, the fruit was picked in perfect condition, and Leroux has delivered a Volnay that’s fragrant and lifted, but with plenty of drive through the palate. The old vines give concentration and depth, while the terroir keeps the style red-fruited, savoury and precise. It’s not about sheer power here – instead it’s elegance and clarity that stand out.
