2023 Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs

The Erdener Treppchen vineyard is one of the Mosel’s steepest and most dramatic sites, its name literally meaning “little staircase” – a nod to the stone steps cut into the slope so growers could reach the vines. It’s here that Ernst Loosen crafts one of his most expressive dry Rieslings, always marked by intensity and a deep mineral core.

The 2023 vintage saw a long, balanced growing season, giving fruit with both concentration and energy. As with all of Loosen’s GGs, the wine was fermented with wild yeasts and left to rest on its lees in large old oak casks, a traditional approach that brings texture and savoury depth without clouding the clarity of the vineyard.

What makes Erdener Treppchen stand out is its combination of ripe citrus and stone fruit flavours with that stony, smoky edge that screams Mosel slate. It’s structured, powerful and built to age, but even now you can see its precision and length. A serious dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most important vineyards and a winemaker who has helped define the style for a generation.
