2024 Hughes & Hughes Chardonnay

The 2024 Hughes & Hughes Chardonnay pulls fruit from across Tasmania – mostly the Derwent, with a splash from the Coal River and North West. Each site brings something different: the Derwent’s line and length, Coal River’s brightness, and a bit of flesh from the island’s north.

About 85% of the fruit was whole-bunch pressed, with the rest left on skins for a few days to bring some grip and weight. Everything was fermented wild in oak – around 15% new – and went through full malo during six months on lees. It was bottled unfined and filtered, keeping that natural texture front and centre.

The wine hits that sweet spot between freshness and richness – white peach and grapefruit with a touch of almond and spice. The palate’s creamy but still taut, with clean acidity and a savoury edge that pulls it all together.

It’s smart Tassie Chardonnay, and very strong value.
