2024 Moko Hills Kakano Pinot Noir
Kākano is the entry to the Moko Hills range, drawn from younger vines scattered across this rugged, elevated site above Bendigo. The vineyard sits on schist and loess soils at around 350 metres, exposed to the wind and cool night air that help shape the fine-boned style Moko Hills is known for. Everything here is farmed organically, with low yields and hands-on detail from the small on-site team.
The 2024 season was steady and dry, giving small, even berries with bright flavour and clean acidity. Winemaker Claire Mulholland has great touch to get this early-drinking Pinot to bottle – wild ferment, gentle extraction, and old oak to preserve the freshness and texture of the fruit.
The wine is lively and bright, showing red cherry, raspberry, and a touch of spice, with crisp tannins and a clean, mineral finish. It’s unpretentious and well made – a clear read of site and season from one of Central Otago’s most thoughtful producers.
