2025 Agricola Flaxman Valley Seeliger Riesling
Callum Powell's first Riesling, and from the same Steinert vineyard as the Seeliger Shiraz. This is a new direction for Agricola, and a genuinely exciting one. Old vines, hillside Flaxman Valley site, wild fermented in the same hands-off spirit that runs through everything Callum makes.
The 2025 dry season delivered concentrated fruit with striking natural acidity, which suits Riesling from a site like this particularly well. The wine is fermented wild rather than with cultured yeast, which gives it a certain unpredictability and texture that sets it apart from more conventional Riesling winemaking.
The style is citrus-driven and mineral, with real concentration and persistence. Fresh and precise, with a lightly waxy texture and a long, taut finish driven by natural acidity and a saline edge. Not a fruit-forward, aromatic Riesling in the Clare Valley mould. Something more compact, more complex and more site-specific than that.
An exciting debut and one for the cellar.

"It’s got incredible concentration and energy, immense persistence... A little waxy in texture, pleasingly, but so fresh feeling. Faint as can be, but complexity giving, a dash of alpine herbs, finds its way through all this too. Very good wine."
