2025 Mount Majura Mencia
Mount Majura continues its run as the Canberra District’s great experimentalist with this inaugural release of Mencía. Originally from the northwest of Spain, the variety is a natural fit for Majura’s continental climate - it loves the warm days and cool nights that preserve its unique floral aromatics.
The 2025 season was a very good one for reds in Canberra, offering the heat needed for tannin ripeness without sacrificing the region’s signature finesse. New winemaker Jeremy Nascimben fermented this in open vats with a 10-day maceration to build structure, then tucked it away in old French oak to keep the fruit front and center.
In the glass, it’s a bright ruby with pungent aromas of violets, cherry blossom, and a hint of white pepper. The palate is juicy and plush, showing blackcurrant fruit alongside a "slatey" mineral edge and a classic bitter cherry finish. It’s an exciting first look at a variety that clearly has a big future on this site.
