Aurélien Suenen has built a reputation as one of the most exciting growers in Champagne, and his home turf in Oiry is the heartbeat of his work. These are chalky, east-facing slopes in the Côte des Blancs, sitting right in the middle of grand cru Chardonnay country. The vines here dig deep into pure chalk, giving wines that are both laser precise and quietly powerful.

This Extra Brut is drawn entirely from Oiry fruit, vinified with minimal intervention and aged on lees to build depth without losing tension. Aurélien’s aim is always to let the chalk speak, and it shows – the wine is saline, structured, and deeply mineral, with the sort of vibrancy that makes you want to go back for another glass straight away. Dosage is kept low to underline that clarity.

Suenen’s wines are still made in tiny quantities and can be difficult to track down, but they’ve become touchstones for anyone serious about grower Champagne. This bottling, in particular, is one of the purest expressions of Oiry terroir you’ll find.
